At MFM Health, your care and well-being are always our top priority. We want to make sure you're informed about an upcoming change to insurance coverage that may affect some patients currently taking GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Zepbound®.
What’s Changing with GLP-1 Medication Coverage?
Starting January 1, 2026, several major insurance providers, including Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim, and UnitedHealthcare, will implement changes to their coverage of GLP-1 medications. While each plan may differ in the details, many insurers will only cover these medications for patients with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes or those whose plans include specific weight management benefits.
This means patients using GLP-1s for other medical reasons, such as weight management without a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, may no longer have coverage.
What You Should Do Now
If you are currently on a GLP-1 medication—or are considering starting one—we strongly recommend you:
Contact your insurance provider to confirm your coverage going into 2026.
Be aware that only Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA-approved for weight management.
Please keep your upcoming appointments with your primary care provider or endocrine specialist to ensure we can review your treatment plan and determine the best course of action.
Please Hold Non-Urgent Questions
We understand these changes may feel frustrating or uncertain, and we are committed to guiding you through them. However, due to the high volume of inquiries expected, we kindly ask that you do not call or message your care team regarding these insurance updates unless your question is time-sensitive.
We’re Here to Help
