Upcoming Insurance Changes for GLP-1 Medications: What You Need to Know

At MFM Health, your care and well-being are always our top priority. We want to make sure you're informed about an upcoming change to insurance coverage that may affect some patients currently taking GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Zepbound®.

What’s Changing with GLP-1 Medication Coverage?

Starting January 1, 2026, several major insurance providers, including Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Harvard Pilgrim, and UnitedHealthcare, will implement changes to their coverage of GLP-1 medications. While each plan may differ in the details, many insurers will only cover these medications for patients with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes or those whose plans include specific weight management benefits.

This means patients using GLP-1s for other medical reasons, such as weight management without a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, may no longer have coverage.

What You Should Do Now

If you are currently on a GLP-1 medication—or are considering starting one—we strongly recommend you:

• Contact your insurance provider to confirm your coverage going into 2026.

• Be aware that only Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA-approved for weight management.

• Please keep your upcoming appointments with your primary care provider or endocrine specialist to ensure we can review your treatment plan and determine the best course of action.
