PREPARING FOR YOUR BONE DENSITY TEST (DEXA)

To ensure accurate results, please follow these simple guidelines before your exam. Proper preparation helps provide the most precise assessment of your bone health. Review the instructions carefully and contact your provider with any questions.

  1. You may eat and drink normally before and after the test.

  2. Avoid taking calcium supplements or multivitamins for at least 24 hours before your exam. Take all other medications as prescribed.

  3. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.

  4. Inform your physician if you recently had a barium examination or have been injected with a contrast material for a CT scan or radioisotope. If so, you may have to wait 10 to 14 days before undergoing a DEXA test. Contrast material may interfere with the bone density test.

  5. Avoid wearing lotions, powders, deodorants, perfumes on the upper torso or arms which may contain minerals that will interfere with your study.

  6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers, belts, buttons or snaps.

  7. Remove jewelry, eyeglasses and metal objects or clothing (ex., under wire bras) that might interfere with the X-ray images.
